Watch: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander kicks Derrick Jones Jr. in the crotch and gets a technical foul instantly for it
Alonzo Adams-USA TODAY Sports

For Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the playoffs are a real test for what he brings to the table. Therefore, he will bring his A-game to the table, especially when considering that he and his Oklahoma City Thunder are to go up against a formidable opponent in the Dallas Mavericks. But it seems on one play his competitiveness went a bit too far when he kicked Derrick Jones Jr. in the crotch, drawing an instant technical foul.

With 10 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter, the MVP candidate had the ball in his hands and was facing Jones Jr. in a one-to-one matchup. He faked the ball and took a step-back jumper. Only for his right leg to kick Jones Jr.’s crotch. The Dallas Mavericks forward instantly grabbed his crotch in pain, leading the referee to call a technical foul.

It was one of the rare instances when Gilgeous-Alexander was called for a foul that looked intentional. In fact, several superstars have resorted to this technique to bait the defender into a foul. However, as this instantly caused Derrick Jones Jr. some pain, the referee had no choice.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander might have to avoid going that route in the next games due to costly technical fouls. With the way the superstar and his teammates are playing, it might not even be necessary.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander turned on the heat in game 1 of round 2

Before the series even started, many were quick to dismiss the Oklahoma City Thunder. They felt that the young squad did not have what it takes to win the battle against the Dallas Mavericks. However, in game 1 they proved those fans and analysts wrong.

After finishing the 1st quarter tied, the Thunder pulled away to a lead and never relinquished it. Feeding off the scoring leadership of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the young team harrowed a pair of superstars on the opposite end. Limiting their production and inevitably snatching the game from them. So much so that the Mavericks could not even get a rally going.

If this elite basketball play continues in game 2 of this playoff series, the Dallas Mavericks will have a tough time countering the Thunder. At the center of it all is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, leading the way just like an MVP candidate is supposed to.
