Pete Alonso, J.D. Martinez get trade update rumors as Mets struggle

The New York Mets are struggling, and there are rumors the team is now looking to move a few players. The Mets are rumored to be exploring trades for Pete Alonso and J.D. Martinez, per USA Today. The Mets are likely to make both players available in talks before the July 30 trade deadline.

Alonso is a first baseman, while Martinez is primarily used as a designated hitter. New York is mired in a frustrating 20-25 season, and Mets management is exploring all options to pull together some wins.

Alonso is batting .230 this season for New York, and is having some success with the long ball. The first baseman has 10 home runs on the season, to go with 23 runs batted in. Alonso’s bat is red-hot, as he is on a four-game hitting streak. The Mets are in action Sunday, where Alonso will try to extend that streak.

The first baseman has become a fan favorite in New York, and it would be hard for fans to see him go. Alonso has spent his entire Major League Baseball career in Queens, playing for the Mets since 2019. He is a career .250 hitter with more than 500 runs batted in in his career.

J.D. Martinez

Martinez is a new kid on the block for New York. The designated hitter joined the team this offseason from the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is having a strong season offensively, with a .315 batting average. On the season, Martinez has crushed two home runs and batted in 9 runs.

The designated hitter has been the subject of rumors all season that his stay in New York may be a short one. Martinez is used to moving around. He has played for five other teams in his MLB career, going back to the 2011 season. Martinez has more than 1,600 hits in his career, and provides a lot of experience and veteran leadership to the clubhouse.

Mets season

The addition of Martinez hasn’t been able to improve the team’s fortunes this year. The Mets are 20-25, and have struggled from the very beginning of the season. The team started 0-5, and haven’t been able to get consistent victories ever since.

A large reason for that struggle has been due to their pitching. The team has been bitten by injuries in their rotation, as ace Kodai Senga hasn’t been able to pitch all year due to shoulder fatigue. Mets closer Edwin Diaz is also returning from an injury and is in danger of losing his role as closer, due to his struggles on the mound. Diaz gave up a four-run lead for the team on Saturday to the Miami Marlins, in a game New York lost.

Mets management still believes the team can turn it around, and that is certainly a possibility. There is plenty of baseball left. The wins have to start coming, however, or New York may find themselves involved in a total rebuild.

The Mets are in action against the Marlins on Sunday. The team has lost two in a row to Miami in this series. The game is ongoing at time of writing.
